I love the use of their mutual interest in art, and the symbolic insertion of the Narcissis and Echo tapestry. Definitely a growing and maturing story with our charming hero tottering on the edge of disaster not only with his 'best' friend, but also with fortune hunters and irresponsible parents. I don't read much regency romance, but I loved this story. The characters are intriguing and I loved the interaction between the two of them. I'll be looking for more romances by this author. Great story.
Usually love her books but not this one! Even though it's obviously a regency, throughout the book I felt like it was a more modern book of some friends going sightseeing day after day and then just throwing in some things to make it with the mores of the regency period. Ms. Fairchild could very obviously change just a few things and sell the book in an alternate genre and make twice the money. But why would any regency affectionado want to bother with it? The story itself wasn't that great either.
This is my favorite Fairchild novel so far! Wait, I really really loved Sugar Plum Surprises, too. Anyway, this novel really is a fresh perspective on regency romances. Much as I love those rakish heroes, Reed is adorable. He's an innocent, not stupid, just young and unaware. The heroine, Megan, is innocent, but not so naive. They are totally convincing as two loving people who have been best friends since childhood. Of course, this is a romance. Reed finally wakes up and realizes he feels much more than friendship, something Megan had known all along. The third party who facilitates this awakening is a fully realized Italian rake with a heart of gold. Loved them all.
